A Game of Draft Orders

Our draft is coming up. This means that the time will come soon for us to get a draft order. For those who do not know, Henry, our Lord and Savior Commissioner, has set that our league determines draft order choice based on previous year’s rankings. To make this clear, let me show you what I mean. As of the end of our season last year, these were the final standings of our league:

1. Shannyn

2. Faran

3. Matt

4. Henry

5. Jake

6. Alex

7. Sam

8. Brian

9. Corey

10. Chris

Based on these standings, this means that Chris is the first who gets to pick which draft number he would like. He gets the first pick of what draft order he wants. He can pick to be the first overall draft pick, or the second, or even the ninth or tenth if he so wishes. It is Chris’s choice. After Chris has decided, Corey is then next to pick whatever remaining draft orders are remaining. He is followed by Brian and then Sam and so on. This means that Shannyn does not get to pick her draft order and must take whatever remaining slot has fallen on her.

Now, though this is an admittedly fair way to decide draft order, in the post, I will present other fun ideas that leagues may use to determine draft orders. One of the great examples of fun, albeit crazy and sometimes dangerous, ideas for draft order comes from the show The League, featured on FX, and can also be found on Netflix. It’s a show I recommend. Anyway, here are some ideas to make draft order a little fun:

Pick a Horse in Horse Derby

A good jockey is also a decent horsewhisperer, which is why they are so close to the horse during the race.

A fun way of playing chance. Each person picks a horse in a race and the placement of the horses determine what the draft order is. In fact, we can do so right here in South Florida. At Gulf Stream Park, you can enjoy casinos, drinks, and even horse racing.

Have CPUs Duke it Out in Super Smash Bros

My money is on Sonic

One of the more interesting ideas. Have a tournament set up for CPU players. Name each CPU after a player in the league and set the CPU level to the highest level. Watch as the players duke it out and use that to determine draft order.

Beer Pong

This is a real life skill

Or any drinking game really. Give the draft order a good college try as you also try to kill those brain cells needed for drafting anyway, but, to be honest, this is probably the more fun method on this list anyway.

Wonderlic Test

“Okay, so if I carry the two and add the temperature of the moon, that should give me the predicate of this sentence?”

This is a fun one. Each NFL player is given a wonderlic IQ test before entering the league. So as a league, we can do the same to determine draft order. Here is the website where you can take a 50 question quiz in 12 minutes. Only one NFL player has ever gotten a perfect 50. The most difficult thing about the test is the timing. For fun, you can take the test and see what you get and comment below to compare. I took it and got a 35, same as Aaron Rodgers. What about you guys? Also, the average NFL score on this is a 20.

Tickets at an Arcade

“What did you do?” “I don’t know, I just pressed start!”

The rules are simple. Everyone starts with 100 tokens and are let loose at any local arcade, be in Dave n Busters or Chuck E Cheese. The amount of racked up tickets acquired used said 100 tickets determines draft order. Also, it’s fun to do. Though I’m sure someone would game the system by finding the one machine that is broken and spits out a thousand tickets by being mediocre at the game. I’ve seen it happen.

Poker Tournament

“Got any 2’s?” “Go fish.”

This is a nice a mixture of gambling and skill. Though to a degree this would depend on chance, it would also depend on how skillful a person is at keeping a poker face. Just a simple game of Texas Hold’em and the order of people who drop out would determine the order of the draft.

March Madness

Hogwarts has an outside shot of winning this thing

A simple bracket tournament in the middle of march could determine the draft order. The fun thing about it is that you involve other sports. The not so fun thing about it is that it’s college basketball.

National Spelling Bee

This is the happiest day of my life

For the inner nerd in all of us, taking bets on the National Spelling Bee which is held at the end of every May. It helps give a little more meaning to the poor kids who were forced in participating by their overbearing parents.

Corn Hole

It’s our patriotic duty

You can’t take this one lightly. Some serious science has gone into corn hole techniques. This is not for the faint of heart. If you’re serious about fantasy football draft order, than this is the method you want.

Those are some fun methods many leagues can decide to use when determining draft order. But whatever the method is, draft you will so be prepared for this year’s draft, where people are still to somehow mess up and draft keepers.
